Shamik Sanyal is a filmmaker and cinematographer based in India, working across Documentary and Natural history formats. Raised in Jalpaiguri at the Himalayan foothills, his storytelling is rooted in ecology, science, and climate justice.

 

Shamik’s work ranges from social and environmental documentaries to wildlife films, adventure sports, and branded content. He has collaborated with Disney+ Hotstar, Discovery Network, Euronews, The Quint, Zoological Survey of India, and others.

Comfortable in remote and underrepresented landscapes, he has filmed species like the snow leopard and the newly identified Sela Macaque. His current project, Vanishing River, a documentary on the Teesta River and its changing ecosystem, was selected for the Green Stories Pitch 2024 and is currently in production. A NEWF Fellow, Shamik combines scientific depth with cinematic form to highlight stories from India’s lesser-seen wilderness and frontline communities. See more
